How to Change IP Address

How to Change IP Address
In this tutorial we will teach you several ways you can change your IP address. Before you try any of the techniques below, try unplugging your modem/router for a few minutes, and then plug it back in. Usually just doing this will be enough to change your IP address. If the IP address does not change after a few minutes then you may want to try leaving your modem unplugged overnight. Most of the time leaving your modem unplugged overnight will get you a new IP address. If this still doesn’t get you a new IP address then you should take a look at the scenario’s below to see which one best fits your situation. Of course, depending on your ISP’s DHCP configuration, you may not be able to get a new IP address at all, without contacting your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Follow this guide to see if it is possible for you to change your IP address.

If your computer is on a network with a router then follow these steps:
1. Log into the router’s admin console by typing in the router’s IP address into your web browser. If you do not know your router’s IP address then refer to your User manual or look it up online based on your router’s model number.
2. Then you will need to release your IP address. The method to do this will vary depending upon the router. All of this information can be found in your router’s manual or online though.
3. Power down the router, the cable/DSL modem, and the Ethernet hubs/switches.
4. Leave everything off overnight.
5. Turn everything back on in the morning.
If you are using a cable/DSL modem/router, then you may want to connect your computer directly to a cable/DSL modem. This will enable your ISP’s DHCP to issue a new IP address based on the MAC address of your computer’s Ethernet card.
If your computer is connected directly to the modem then you have two options when changing your IP address.

Option 1

1. Go to the Start menu, then select run, then type in CMD to open the command prompt.
2. Type ipconfig /release into the command box.
3. Then, type ipconfig /renew into the command box.

Option 2

1. Get to a command prompt. (START, run, cmd).
2. Type “ipconfig /release” (without the quotes).
3. Shut down computer.
4. Turn off computer.
5. Turn off all Ethernet hubs/switches.
6. Turn off cable/DSL modem.
7. Leave off overnight.
8. Turn everything back on.

If the above techniques have not worked for you and you have a router, then check if there is a “Clone MAC Address” option in your routers control panel. Using this feature should allow you to change your IP address, but this solution will only work one time in most situations. Of course these techniques will not always work. If all else fails then you should contact your internet service provider (ISP) and ask them if they are able to change your IP address or how long your connection needs to be off for your IP address to change.
